An open source technology is an asset (e.g., code, hardware design, content, scientific knowledge, development process) with a distribution license that provides users the freedom to use the asset for any purpose, to study and modify the asset, and to redistribute copies of either the original or modified asset without having to pay royalties to previous developers of the asset.
